…For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord, being double-minded and unstable in all his ways. James 1:6-7 CSB
My husband and I arrived at church one Sunday morning, parked, and as I reached down to get my purse before exiting the car, I gasped in horror at the sight of two entirely different boots on my feet. Both were cowboy boots, but one was navy blue with a little white and the other was brown with light green. How, you might wonder, could I accidentally pull on two boots that different? Well I couldn’t decide which pair looked better with my dress. I stood in front of my mirror turning side to side again and again. My dress was blue and green and both pairs would work, but which was the best? “I’ll ask Steve,” I said out loud.
Of course I got busy gathering my Bible, sweater, purse, and wedding band. Steve was waiting with his water bottle in hand. “You look nice,” he beamed, making eye contact. And out the door we went.
I have a reputation of indecisiveness. My answer to being asked, “Where do you want to eat,” is always “I don’t know,” or “I don’t care.” We’ve joked about opening a restaurant called, I Don’t Know and I Don’t Care. It would be a favorite of a lot of people!
But there is one thing I’m sure of–my faith. I don’t want to be like the sea, being tossed about by the wind. My friend, faith is something you need to be single-minded about. When Satan tempts you and makes you question, focus your life and light on the One who gave all for you and shine that light on someone else.
Steve and I laughed so hard going from the parking lot into the church. He said, “If you don’t call attention to your feet, maybe no one else will notice.” But of course they did, and I found myself addressing the mistake over and over again with a lot of laughter. Wearing two different cowboy boots is funny–not being sure of your faith isn’t. Choose Jesus because He chose you.
“Father God, thank you for Your Son and a choice to believe in Your sacrifice or go along with the lost world’s opinions. Please help us choose the narrow way and stay focused on You. Amen.”
